When the sun goes down on <i>La Ville-Lumi\u00e8re, <\/i>the\u00a0classic monuments and cobblestone boulevards of this vibrant city take on an entirely new appearance.<\/p>\n<p>Many may not realize that its name first referred to its fame as a centre of education and ideas during the\u00a0Age of Enlightenment, and later to its early adoption of\u00a0street lighting. During the second half of the\u00a019th century\u00a0Emperor Napoleon III\u00a0transformed Paris\u00a0into a modern city, tearing down entire sections dating back to the Middle Ages, and opening large avenues which let light\u00a0into the former mediaeval city.<\/p>\n<p>The Louvre Museum is a showpiece not only of some of the world&#8217;s finest art, but of Paris after dark.\u00a0With more than 8 million visitors each year it is the world&#8217;s most visited museum, and houses nearly 35,000 objects from prehistory to the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>Built in the 12th century, the Louvre has been transformed through the ages from a fortress, to a royal palace, an artist&#8217;s residence, and finally to its present role as a bastion of the art world. It&#8217;s modern glass pyramid, created in 1989 by architect\u00a0I. M. Pei, is a fascinating design that bridges the gap from the old world to the new.
